Mind the gap!

Stay safe on our railways

Remember, when crossing railway lines:

  • Always use footbridges, level crossings or underpasses

  • Dismount from cycles and scooters

  • Put phones away, take earphones out and hoods down

  • Never take short cuts across the track

  • Don't ignore the safety notices

At railway stations:

  • Stay behind the yellow line on the platform

  • If you see or drop something onto the tracks report it - never try to retrieve it yourself

  • Don't ignore the safety notices

  • Mind the gap when boarding the train

  • Don't push - let people off the train before getting on yourself

Facts about trains

Trains are not cars.  Trains don't have a steering wheel to change the direction they are heading.  Trains cannot leave the track to avoid hitting something on the track.  Trains in the UK can reach up to 125 miles per hour and can weigh up to 400 tonnes - the Statue of Liberty only weighs 225 tonnes!  If a train driver needs to brake to avoid hitting an obstacle on a track, whilst driving a train weighing 400 tonnes travelling at 125 miles per hour, it takes 2 km (1.25 miles) for the train to stop - that's the length of 20 premier league football pitches.  DON'T BE THAT OBSTACLE!

Trespass

Trespassing on the railway network is a serious problem. Research indicates that people fail to understand the danger of stepping on the track, and reasons for trespassing include anti-social behaviour, fare-evasion and short cuts.  There are many consequences to trespass including:

  • being hit by a train

  • minor injuries

  • serious injuries

  • criminal record

  • fines

  • prison

  • hurting those you love

  • trauma to others

  • death

Anyone aged 10 years and over can by fined for trespassing because the law says 10 year olds know what is right and wrong. Fines for trespassing are £1,000
